Attending the Maker Faire in Silicon Valley back in 2014 was one of the key moments that inspired the Faircap project. Realizing that anyone could make something creative, technologically advanced or useful stuff in their garage, college, school or home was very empowering.
It has been four months since we started receiving HIF support to continue developing the Faircap filter. Since then we have made progress in defining the final 3D design and working with two labs to prepare the first series production,
As part of the FabCity research program we started working at the FabLab Barcelona. It’s great to be working in a place that is full of tools, students, design and innovation.

Faircap’s goal is to provide clean water for everyone, in that vein we are making filtration tools that remove bacteria and viruses. Our aim is to make a $1 water filter, we’re hoping to run a crowdfunding campaign to bring the cost down and create a single unit that can filter both chemicals and bacteria and screw onto any standard sized bottle cap.
During the last 2 weeks of POC21’s innovation camp we found 2 new 3D printing filaments, one porous to print membranes(Layfelt) and one that has probably a silver compound additive that kills bacteria.
We participated during the Open Source Circular Economy Days in Barcelona in June organizing one of the practical activities or workshops. We presented more information about the project at one of Barcelona’s city Fab Labs, Ateneu de Fabricacio la Fabrica del Sol
The first time I heard the term “activated carbon” I thought it was a complex, expensive, hard to make chemical product. It sounded very technical, but I found out it was not that difficult to make at home.
We tested the working prototypes under the microscope and with bacterial cultivation at the Hospital Sant Camilo in Sant Pere de Ribes near Barcelona.
We have the first 3d printed prototypes ready! Thanks to the city of Barcelona’s Fablab network we worked with the Ateneu de Fabricacio.
